The Landmarks app
You can browse, search and filter the landmark catalog and read building details without a Landmarks account. The catalog and its search run on your device. The native app does not send your catalog searches, review-prompt history or saved walks to a Bicycle Labs, LLC server, and does not include a developer-operated advertising or analytics service.
The app connects to Apple and other providers for the features described below. Their handling of information is covered by their own privacy policies. You can also find the app’s privacy information on its App Store listing.
Location and Apple Maps
The app asks for permission to use your location while you use it. If allowed, it can show your position and center the map near you. You can browse by moving the map or choosing a building without granting location access. Landmarks does not keep a continuous record of your movements.
Maps, Look Around imagery and walking-route calculations use Apple’s services. Requests can include the area or building you are viewing and the coordinates needed for a route. Choosing Open in Maps passes the selected destination to Apple Maps. Apple may process location and technical information as described in Apple Maps & Privacy.
Build me a walk and saved walks
When your version of Landmarks includes Build me a walk, you can choose a starting point, available time and interest. Using your current location as the start requires location permission. You can instead start from the map or a selected landmark.
Landmarks selects stops on your device and asks Apple for walking directions between possible stops. These requests include starting and destination coordinates, including for route options that may not appear in the final walk.
Your current walk is saved on your device, including its starting point, chosen time and interest, creation time, stops, route and any stops you manually mark visited or skipped. If you start at your current location, that starting coordinate is part of the saved walk. Marking a stop visited does not enable continuous location tracking.
A saved walk remains after completion so you can return to it. Creating a new walk successfully replaces it. Deleting the app removes its local copy; device backups may retain an earlier copy.
Other data on your device
Landmarks stores app preferences and limited history used to decide when to ask for a review. This includes session counts, relevant installation and review-prompt dates, app version and identifiers for qualifying landmarks you have viewed. This history is used locally, not sent to Bicycle Labs, LLC.
Reports you open may be cached on your device to load them again. The system may clear cached files. App preferences and saved walks may be included in device or iCloud backups, depending on your settings. There is no separate Landmarks cloud account or walk-sync service.
Reports and photographs
When a designation report is not already cached, opening it downloads a file from its source, usually a New York City website. Some building pages also load photographs from external image hosts automatically when Look Around imagery is unavailable. These hosts receive ordinary connection and request information, such as your IP address and the file requested, and may retain logs under their own practices.
Ask ChatGPT (Beta)
Choosing this optional feature opens the ChatGPT website inside Landmarks and automatically attempts to submit a prepared prompt about the selected building. The prompt includes its name, address, building type, construction year, architect, style, a short description and an available report link. Submission may wait until you sign in. The prepared prompt does not include your current GPS location, app search history or saved walk.
To send the prompt and avoid duplicate submission, the app checks the browser page’s sign-in and message state. This handling takes place in the app; Landmarks does not upload a separate copy of your chat to Bicycle Labs, LLC.
ChatGPT is provided by OpenAI and may require a separate account. OpenAI receives the submitted prompt, messages you send, account information and connection or usage information such as your IP address and browser details. Its service may use cookies, analytics and advertising, subject to its Privacy Policy and your account settings. Chat content may be used to improve OpenAI’s models depending on your settings.
The embedded browser retains cookies and website storage between visits, so your sign-in can persist. Signing in or following links can also connect to other websites and authentication providers. You can use Landmarks without opening ChatGPT.
This website
Netlify hosts this website. Delivering a page or file involves connection and request information, such as an IP address, requested URL, request time and browser information. Hosting services may keep logs to operate and secure the site. See Netlify’s privacy information.
Browse searches and filters run in your browser and appear in the page URL. That URL can remain in browser history, can be included in links you share, and is sent to the host when the page is opened or reloaded. The website does not request your device’s location. Its app demo and screenshots are hosted with the site.
Website analytics
Bicycle Labs, LLC uses Google Analytics on the public landmarksapp.com website to measure traffic from search engines and other sources, understand which pages are useful, and see which links lead visitors to the App Store. Website analytics is separate from the native app; adding it here does not add Google Analytics to Landmarks itself.
Information includes page loads and URLs viewed, scrolling, referring websites and campaign information, catalog search text, building and report link clicks, file downloads, app-demo starts and completions, and App Store clicks. Events may include the page or building identifier, link destination, destination app platform and where a download button appeared. An App Store click tells us that someone followed a link, not whether they purchased the app.
Google processes browser, device and connection information and uses cookies to measure visits and recognize returning browsers. Reports can include approximate geographic areas derived from connection information. We disable Google signals and advertising personalization in this website’s tag. We do not send your native app’s location, saved walks or ChatGPT conversations to this website analytics service.
We configure Google Analytics to retain user-level and event-level data for 14 months, with the option to extend user-data retention on new activity turned off. Aggregated reports may remain available longer. Google explains these settings in its data retention information.
Development and preview versions have analytics disabled unless deliberately opened in a diagnostic mode. Diagnostic events are excluded from standard analytics reports.
Browser controls can restrict cookies, and blocking the analytics script prevents these events from being sent. You can also use Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on in supported browsers. Read how Google uses information from sites that use its services. Clearing cookies does not delete information already processed by Google.
App Store links and purchases
App Store links include campaign labels for the page or content group. These help us understand which parts of the website lead people to the app; they do not contain a personal identifier created by Landmarks. Apple handles App Store visits, purchases, payment details and reviews under Apple’s privacy policies. This website does not take payments.
Your choices and deletion
- Location: change Landmarks’ access in your device’s Settings under Privacy & Security, then Location Services. You can continue browsing without it.
- Local app data: delete Landmarks to remove its data from the device. Offloading the app preserves its documents and data. Manage device and iCloud backups separately in Apple’s settings.
- ChatGPT: use ChatGPT’s settings to sign out, manage conversations or request account deletion. Its Data Controls explain choices about model improvement and your data. Landmarks has no separate clear-browser-data button. Deleting Landmarks does not delete your OpenAI account or conversations held by OpenAI.
- Website data: use your browser’s controls to clear browsing history and site data. Clearing browser data does not remove records already held by hosting or other providers.
- Information sent to us: contact Bicycle Labs, LLC to ask about access, correction or deletion of your support correspondence. For information held by Apple, OpenAI or another provider, use that provider’s privacy controls.
Contact and support
If you choose Email Support in the app, you can review and send a draft through your mail app. The app does not automatically attach diagnostics. If you send it, Bicycle Labs, LLC receives your email address and the message or attachments you choose to include. Support correspondence is held in our email service for handling your request and follow-up questions; you can ask us to delete it.
For support or privacy requests, email Bicycle Labs, LLC at contact@landmarksapp.com. There is no Landmarks account to close.
